Four hundred years in the future, genetic engineering has created three species of humans. Homo sapiens – the Sapes – are the masters. The Sirians are savage and insular. The Helots are slaves, denied even the right to breed. Now, after generations of abuse and exploitation, the Helots seek to overthrow their masters by attacking Zeus, the supercomputer that oversees the Sapes’ society.
For Maddy Hawthorn, a Sape colonist, the peaceful life she had planned at Barnard’s Star is torn apart when she becomes involved in the Helot’s terrorist plot to destroy the stranglehold of the Elite over the other races. Reluctantly, she joins up with insurgent Helot Igil Hoo and renegade Sirian Dorac Elsilunda. Together, they are forced to work for the revolution.
Soon they are sent on a suicide mission to destroy Zeus. Trying to stop them is Agnes Lawson, a navy commander who finds herself sympathizing more and more with the rebels. On a remote planet called Lizard all four find themselves facing not only formidable military opposition but also fundamental questions about their own motives, as well as the nature of the society which has made them who they are.

This story was just ok. I read it all the way through and never did figure out the relevance of the title. I felt the way the characters came together to be improbable - with normally good people deciding to stay with and do the bidding of the terrorists even after they had multiple chances to escape. Sending Agnes to Lizard served no point from the perspective of Zeus's manipulation of events. The only purpose of her being there was to explain the conspiracy at the end. Without her explanation I wouldn't have a clue as to why any of the events happened. There were a few very improbable details. Obviously the author has never known a redhead. He has her sunbathing in a bikini and getting a tan. Redheads have very pale and sensative skin; they don't tan, they burn. On top of that, she grew up and lived in a spaceship for 35 years. Anyone who did that would be super sensitive to the sun.
Also, afrer Maddie came out of a muddy swamp and exchanged her totally ruined clothes for a borrowed pair of men's overalls, where did she get a handkerchief to cover her nose?
And where did the Helot child come from when the race cannot breed?
It's an ok read. Just not great. I think the writer has potential.

Days of Iron eBook Russell Proctor Reviews
Days of Iron
First and foremost let me say that the futuristic science fiction/mystery/thriller aspect of this novel had my vote from the very beginning because I am at heart a science fiction nut and I wasn't disappointed. I loved the blend of modern realism, with the social injustices with which we live on a daily basis but no one wants to talk about, and futuristic overtones because it's set in a time when one would think that those same social injustices and difficulties are things which we would've surpassed.
I also love the way that the author weaves a tale of intrigue and suspense while interlacing real world facts in regards to the daily struggle of life with things like space travel and colonization, water rationing and air recycling and the like. This is not a novel in which all problems are solved with just the push of a button or the adaptation of current technology to suit the given situation, the characters are forced into a creative approach to problem solving and I like that. The characters are more relatable and tend to be three dimensional and they came alive for me instead of being just a name on a piece of paper as they were by turn apathetic, angry, happy and scared and thoroughly believable.
I will admit that the ending was not at all what I expected, it wasn't all falling stars and fool's gold and not everything worked out perfectly and according to plan for all the characters involved which is yet another example of an aspect that snagged my interest. I'm not the type of person that enjoys an exclusively happy ending in all written works. I've always enjoyed a bit of a twist because it frankly keeps me guessing and keeps me wrapped up in a story.
All in all, I loved Days of Iron and wish to heartily congratulate Russell Proctor on a job incredibly well done and an intensely enjoyable tale and I whole heartedly recommend it to anyone who loves to curl up on the couch with a good book and get lost in a story as this is the kind of novel that fits the bill.

Interesting characters, not too many to confuse an old mind.
The story was unpredictable and full of surprising twists and adventures, not too soppy either.
Clear writing, unique story and great entertainment.
I recently purchased Days of Iron through as I was curious to find out more about the writing style of up and coming author Russell Proctor. Any fan of Sci-Fi will love this book as will anyone who enjoys thrillers. I am not usually a fan of this genre of book, but the author's own unique style captured my attention and I found that I had finished the book within a few days. Perhaps what I found most intriguing with Days of Iron was that it left some questions unanswered which leaves scope for Mr Proctor to delight us with I hope another book in what I pray will become a series. There are too many unanswered questions to be resolved. The plight of the Helots in the story is tragic and can be likened to the slaves throughout history - with one exception that they are not permitted to breed.
Mr Proctor's novel is set in a futuristic galactic time and the central character Maddy is like any flawed hero who has to struggle to survive. She has her own past to deal with which I hope to read more about in future novels. Suffice to say, this book has left me wanting more. I whole heartedly recommend this book to anyone who likes a story that can entice you any many levels - moreover, it is just a damn good read.
The writing wasn't good enough to get me past the first 100 pages. I like to give a book a chance but this just didn't get me there. Interesting premise but the writing and character development wasn't enough for me.
