Excerpt from The Learned Men

Dr. F. William Faber It lives on the ear like a mus1c. That can never be forgotten, like the sound of church bells, which the convert hardly knows how he can forego. Its \felicities often seem to be almost things rather than mere words. It is part of the national mind and the anchor of national seriousness. The memory of the dead passes into it. The potent traditions of childhood are stereotyped in its verses. The power of all the griefs and trials of a man is hidden beneath its words. It is the representative of his best moments; and all that there has been about him of soft, and gentle, and pure, and penitent, and good speaks to him for ever out of his English Bible.

This 212 page book "learned men" by Gustauvus Paine is an examination of the times and lives of the men who produced the King James Bible. If the King James Bible is the perfect, errorless Word of God in the english language (and it is) I owe it to myself to read about the men who brought this great book together. It was not what I expected.

1st off the # of men who did the actual translation is not agreed on .Some say 48 ,some say 57.The men who translated were more part time than full time and without regular pay by the King (James). They took days off and enjoyed sports and many preached at their church on sundays.Concerning wisdom these men were indeed extremely wise and could speak fluently many languages and were well versed in Greek/Hebrew.These men had normal home lives and with the usual arguments and problems .These men were of different dispositions, some were outgoing while some were quiet and introverted. Some mean spirited ,some full of laughter, others melconally. One translator even accidentally shot a man to death( with an arrow) in a hunting accident years after the translation was complete.

This book gives examples of the translators in the actual work in progress, words revised, edited, slang argued about and subsequently removed. It discusses the various reference materials at that time and how heavily one was used more than the others. The 15 rules of translation is examined and adhered to by all participants. The Guy Fawkes incident is during this time and it is revealed there was a 9 foot thich wall under the house of Lords ,that was the reason why it was not blown up,Indeed I always thot the Kings men just caught them in the nick of time.

To continue--There are 45 examples of the finished verses compared to the other translations of that day (Coverdale,Tyndale,Geneva, and Revised Standard version) There is also a complete Bibliography in the back for further reading on most of the translators and their sermons. An index too is in the back for quick reference on any topic covered in this book.

Best of all---this book is a reprint of another book from 1834 and as such has no pro or anti KJVO movement bias. Its a bit difficult to read as it uses 180 year old english and is written in a different style than that of today---but still totally readable.--If you want the details behind the King James Bible and the men that wrote it this book is for you.

Was exactly as I expected.
Curious it says first printed 1834, but there are references to Mormons being in Utah, the Bible Belt, Christian Science, and the Dead Sea Scrolls, which are ALL after that date. And the reference list has dates into the late 20th century. Can't figure it out.
But the book is rich and compelling.
Should be read along with the Bible. They belong together.
Amazing Book about Amazing men!
A classic work, perhaps the best, on the translators of the Authorised Version of 1611, commonly known as the King James Version ( KJV)-- well worth the investment if the subject interests you.
The book is a carefully written collection of biographies of the men who formed a committee that interpreted and translated into English, the King James Bible.
The men were very well educated, not only in theology, but in the classic languages that the books of the Scriptures they were translating. They were fluent in Latin, Hebrew, Greek and other lesser known languages. They did most of their work individually, and then would meet periodically to compare notes.
Since I much prefer the original King James version over most of what I consider to be "dummied down" new versions, I am sure this is the one I will always treasure
